Our Mission

Muddy Hands, Happy Hearts!
At Mudpuppy Palace, our mission is to provide a
safe space for learners of ALL ages to explore the wonderment of nature through hands-on exploration, creativity, and outdoor discovery.
We believe meaningful learning happens through experience. By engaging directly with the natural world, learners of ALL ages are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and build confidence through play, investigation, and creative problem-solving.

Our work bridges nature and STEAM education—combining environmental exploration with building, making, and discovery. Whether investigating insects, designing structures, or exploring local ecosystems, each experience is designed to spark curiosity, collaboration, and a lifelong love of learning.

Through Marty’s Mobile Mudroom, we bring these opportunities directly into schools, libraries, parks, and community spaces through our Field FLIPs (Field Learning & Immersive Play) —expanding access and meeting learners where they are.

As we grow, our future Mudpuppy Palace campus will become a year-round destination where indoor and outdoor environments work together to support exploration in every season.

Guided by our motto, “Muddy Hands, Happy Hearts,” we believe that when learners are free to explore, create, and discover, they develop not only knowledge—but confidence, resilience, and joy.

What is a Mudpuppy?
Mudpuppy; Necturus maculosus
The Mudpuppy, also known as a water dog, is one of 23 species of salamanders that call Indiana home. Unlike its cousins, the Hellbender and Axolotl, a Mudpuppy is the only salamander that "barks" although it really sounds more like "Squeak!"
Mudpuppies can be found in lakes, rivers, and streams in a variety of states, though in Indiana they are considered 'Of Special Concern' and are typically very hard to find. A Mudpuppy often feeds on small fish, insect larvae, and crayfish. They can live approximately 11 years and grow to be about 16 inches in length.

Our Story
Mudpuppy Palace didn’t start as a franchise or a pre-designed concept—it started as an idea, a need, and a whole lot of heart.

As mothers of six children between us, we—Allison Williams and Laura Kuhn—saw a gap in our community. We wanted a place where children could safely explore, create, and experience the wonderment of nature, even within a small Midwest town. But more than that, we envisioned something bigger—a space where learners of all ages could connect with nature, creativity, and discovery.

From the very beginning, we also wanted our name to be part of the learning experience. While axolotls have become popular with children, we chose Indiana’s own native salamander—the mudpuppy—as our inspiration. Our hope is simple: even if you leave knowing nothing else, you’ll know what a mudpuppy is and where it lives.

We originally set out to build a permanent location right away. Twice, we pursued specific properties, but as our ideas—and the needs of our future learners—continued to grow, so did our vision. Rather than settling, we chose to keep dreaming bigger while searching for the right place to bring Mudpuppy Palace to life.

In the meantime, Laura had an idea: what if we didn’t wait?

That idea became Marty’s Mobile Mudroom.

Through a generous grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, we were able to design and build a custom trailer—now a fully equipped traveling classroom filled with STEAM and nature-based materials, tools, and creative resources. The Mudroom allows us to bring hands-on learning directly to schools, libraries, parks, and community events—serving learners of ALL ages, abilities, and backgrounds, wherever they are.

Then, in the spring of 2025, everything began to shift.
The Mudroom trailer was ordered in March, and just one month later, in April, the Posey County Commissioners generously donated land for our future home. Suddenly, Mudpuppy Palace was no longer just an idea—it was being seen, supported, and believed in.
In the months that followed, we have grown exponentially. We are booking Field FLIPs, expanding programming, and actively planning our future campus. We have both completed our Advanced Indiana Master Naturalist certifications, and we continue to build meaningful relationships with community partners who see—and believe in—our mission.
Alongside this growth, we have been supported every step of the way by a dedicated Board of Directors who believed in Mudpuppy Palace from the very beginning. Their guidance, encouragement, and shared commitment to our vision have helped shape this organization into what it is today—and what it will continue to become.

Every detail of Mudpuppy Palace has been built from the ground up—every idea, every program, every experience—shaped by our families, our community, and a shared belief in the power of hands-on learning.

Today, while our mobile programming continues to grow, we are also preparing for our future home—a permanent, year-round destination where learners of all ages can explore, create, and discover through nature in every season.

At its core, this work is deeply personal. It’s rooted in our families, our community, and our belief that people learn best when they are free to explore, get messy, and experience the wonderment of the natural world.

Because truly—muddy hands make happy hearts.
